Preparing your Quilt

Here are the guidelines for bringing your quilt in to the studio to have it quilted:

1. Ensure that all threads are clipped on the top of the quilt.  The machine foot can get caught in unclipped threads, potentially resulting in damage to your quilt or the machine.

2. Backing and batting must be at least an extra four inches on all four sides of the quilt.  This allows for the quilt backing to be clipped to the top and bottom rollers of the machine’s frame.  It also allows for the quilt to be clamped on the sides, and for any draw up during the quilting process.

3. Be sure that edges are straight and all pieces have been pressed.  This is particularly important for the backing when you have those intense creases caused by it being folded on the original bolt of the fabric.  Without these being pressed out, you may get tucks and folds in the back of the quilt.  Neither of us want this.

4. Any decorative elements to your quilt (buttons, beads, etc.) cannot be added before the quilting is complete.  The machine foot could catch on these, the needle could hit them and break them, the needle or knock the timing out of the machine.  Again, neither of us want this.

5. Bring your quilt in three pieces, backing, batting, and quilt top.  It is not necessary to have them pinned together, or even folded together.  They go on the machine as three separate units.

6. I provide the thread for quilting and have a large supply of colours for you to choose from. In stock quilting patterns are applied free of charge; a $25 surcharge is applied for special order patterns. Feel free to browse these sources for ideas and send me the pattern name and pattern link (if possible) before bringing your quilt to me.

7. I do not sell batting.
